Antigua

Antigua, which means old in Spanish, is the oldest town in the Canary Islands. Dating back to around 1485, Antiguea was founded by Norman and Andalusia colonists.

Although this town has been the capital of Fuerteventura for two brief periods, there are only few historical buildings in Antigua.

Two most popular tourist attractions in this town include the Artesania Molino de Antigua, which is a renovated 17 th century public windmill, and the nearby Iglesia de la Virgen de la Antigua, which is a church that dates back to the 18 th century.

While Antigua is just a quaint small town with a total area of 250 square meters, its importance is clearly seen because it holds the administrative center of the Antigua Municipality.

Majority of the towns in Antigua municipality cover a plain of roughly 200 meters above sea level. For this reason, this area was an ideal location of the popular windmills.
The municipality of Antigua includes towns such as La Corte, Las Pocetas, Las Salinas del Carmen, Caleta de Fustes and Los Llanoz del dinerro, Triguvijate, Pozo Negro, Agua de Buevas, Valles de Ortega, Casillas Morales, Costa de Antigua, Los Alares and Antigua.

The present population of the Antigua town is approximately 3,000. The main livelihood of the inhabitants of this town is based on fishing and agriculture. However, young people also find work in the nearby resorts of Caleta de Fuste.
Antigua is also famous for its countless markets and wholesale shops.
