Puerto del Rosario

Puerto Del Rosario is on the east side of Fuerteventura . It emerged during the late 18 th century as a little village known for raising cattle.

The town was originally a site of a Watering Hole used by the local farmers for their goats. It used to cater little herder s cottages and sailor s huts.

In the early 19 th century, however, a woman named Maria Estrada opened up a tavern, which made way to the development of the port. This city used to be called as Puerto de Cabras (Goat s Port). The port was used for exporting the goats and barilla products.
Due to this development, it was declared the Fuerteventura capital in 1860. In 1965, the name Puerto de Cabras was replaced by its present name Puerto Del Rosario.

Interestingly, although Puerto Del Rosario is not a very picturesque capital, it provides an excellent connection by air and sea. It is considered the principal port of access to Fuerteventura. For this reason, the local council has been improving the town s appearance to draw more tourists.

The population of this capital city is approximately 18,000. Although the town is not geared up for tourism, it has is a progressive industrial area.
